Conselheiro designado por Resolução do Conselho de MinistrosGraduate (University of Lisbon) and post-graduate (University of Cambridge) in the area of languages and literature pursued a career in the area of gender equality, both at national and international level. Presently retired, chaired the national machinery for equality, Commission for Equality and Women?s Rights, the Steering Committee for Equality between Women and Men of the Council of Europe and the Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men of the European Commission; also a former member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities of the Council of Europe, and of EIGE Experts?Forum (European Institute for Gender Equality). Has also worked as international consultant for several UN agencies (DAW, OHCHR, UNECE, UNICEF, UNIFEM,), Council of Europe, European Commission and OSCE. Awards: ?Comenda? of the Order of Merit and Gold Medal of the 50th anniversary of the UDHR. Distinguished in 2012 by EIGE in the context of the Program ?Women inspiring Europe?.
