Margarida Silvestre is a medical doctor, specialist in Gynecology-Obstetrics, subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine by the Portuguese Medical Association, and holds a consultant degree in Gynecology-Obstetrics. She works clinically at CLINIMER-Clínica de Medicina da Reproduction, Centro Cirúrgico de Coimbra.
PhD in Bioethics from the Portuguese Catholic University, she is a Professor of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), coordinator of a postgraduate course, and leader of 5 curricular units in Health Ethics.
She is currently a Member of the National Council of Ethics for Life Sciences, President of the National Council of Medical Ethics and Deontology of the Portuguese Medical Association, Senior Deputy of the SIG Ethics and Law Steering Committee of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, President of the FMUC Ethics Committee, President of the College of Reproductive Medicine Subspecialty of the Portuguese Medical Association and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine, among other positions.
