Margarida Silvestre is a medical doctor specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a subspecialty in Reproductive Medicine accredited by the Portuguese Medical Association and holds the position of Senior Hospital Assistant in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She practices clinically at CLINIMER – Reproductive Medicine Clinic, Surgical Center of Coimbra.
She holds a PhD in Bioethics from the Portuguese Catholic University and is a Professor of Medical Ethics/Bioethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, where she coordinates a postgraduate program and leads five curricular units in the field of Health Ethics. She also teaches at the Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Aveiro.
She is currently a Member of the National Council of Ethics for the Life Sciences (elected by the Portuguese Parliament), President of the National Council of Medical Ethics and Deontology of the Portuguese Medical Association, President of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, Member of the Committee on Ethical Aspects of Human Reproduction and Women's Health of FIGO – International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and Secretary-General of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine, among other roles.
