International Seminar on the Role of National Ethics Councils in Europe | 5 March | Lisbon

The National Ethics Council for the Life Sciences (CNECV) will hold, on 5 March in Lisbon, its annual international seminar open to the public, under the theme “Digital Sovereignty for Europe – an ethical framework”. The seminar will take place from 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Auditorium 2 of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG), in Lisbon.

The initiative, to be held during the morning, is part of the Estates General of Bioethics and provides a forum for reflection on the mission of National Ethics Councils in the European context, as well as on the conditions required for the effective fulfilment of their mission—particularly with regard to the legal framework, human and financial resources, and available technical means.

CNECV invites researchers, professionals, policymakers, students, and all those interested to take part in this session, which will bring together perspectives and experiences from different European countries and enable an informed debate on the current and future challenges of ethics in the life sciences.

VIEW THE PROGRAMME

The Estates General of Bioethics are an unprecedented initiative taking place between September 2025 and July 2026, across several regions of the country from north to south. They coincide with the 35th anniversary of the creation of CNECV and the end of its sixth term of office. The aim is to foster national and international reflection on the role of the Council, revisiting its history, analysing the present, and projecting the future, with a view to an increasingly effective fulfilment of its mission within the scientific-technological, social, and political-legislative contexts in which it operates.

The session will be conducted in English.

Registration for the international seminar is now open and can be completed via the available online form. Admission is free, subject to prior registration for space management purposes. Certificates of attendance will be issued after the event, upon request to the organisers.
