Biologist, PhD in Cell Biology from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra in 1997, where he is a Full Professor in the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, teaching Developmental Biology, Biomedicine and Reproductive Biology. Conducts research at the CNC – Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra, in the group Biology of Reproduction and Stem Cells, which he coordinates. Past-President of the CNC (2014-2020). Has published more than 145 original scientific papers, having oriented more than 20 PhDs. Evaluator for 12 agencies and more than 40 international journals and member of the editorial board of five journals. Has coordinated PhD Programmes in Biosciences and in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine. Has additional training in Bioethics, Science Communication and Narrative Medicine. João Ramalho-Santos is the author of several works of scientific dissemination, in different formats, and science themed fictions published in "Nature" magazine and on the LabLit.com website. He writes about comics in "JL- Jornal de Letras, Artes & Ideias", and is the co-author of several works, including works of scientific dissemination using comics, as well as opinion texts in partnership with the newspaper "PÚBLICO".
