Full Professor of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Santa Maria Hospital. He was the first elected President of the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences and was elected Vice-President of the Bioethics Department of the Council of Europe. Has coordinated three successive research projects on Sexual and Reproductive Health in the European Union. He is the author of several books on current issues in Bioethics.
