RUI NUNES is a medical doctor, the first PhD in Bioethics in Portugal, and obtained an Aggregate Degree in Medical Sociology and an Aggregate Degree in Bioethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP).
Full Professor at the FMUP and a Consultant in the Hospital Medical Career. Director of the Doctoral Programme in Bioethics and the Doctoral Programme in Palliative Care.
Member of the Medico-Legal Council (Ministry of Justice), member of the Ethics Committee of the National Institute of Legal Medicine, and former evaluator for the Centre for Judicial Studies.
President of the Ethics Committee of the FMUP. Full Academician of the National Academy of Medicine of Portugal.
Head of the International Chair in Bioethics (ICB)
Former member of the General Council of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.
Former Director of the Oporto Higher School of Health Technologies and first President of the Health Regulatory Authority.
Former board member of the International Society on Priorities in Health Care and the European Health Management Association.

Rui Nunes has published 29 books on topics related to bioethics, health, culture and society, namely works on Health Regulation, Living Will, GeneÉtica and Healthcare as a Universal Human Right.
